Chapter 7 - The Workers’ Table
Employees joined the meeting from hotel kitchens, laundry rooms, front desks and retirement apartments.
The wealthy guests remained beside the pool.
The people usually hidden behind service doors appeared on every screen.
Rosa received the first board seat.
A retired porter received the second.
A maintenance supervisor received the third.
A widow whose husband had worked as a chef for thirty-eight years received the fourth.
Claire was offered the fifth seat.
She declined.
“The family has controlled enough seats.”
The workers selected an independent housing attorney instead.
The new board permanently rejected the luxury development.
Protected leases became permanent.
No family member could sell employee property without a resident vote.
The housing reserve was separated from Whitmore control.
Vanessa’s fee disappeared.
Margaret lost her trust chairmanship.
Daniel’s authority remained suspended pending a child-welfare review.
He did not protest.
Vanessa looked at him.
“You are letting employees take control of your company.”
“No.”
Daniel looked toward the screens.
“I am acknowledging the part they already own.”
Emma’s thirty-four-percent share remained in Lily’s protected trust.
The child would not personally control billions.
An independent advocate and the employee board would safeguard the vote until she became an adult.
No parent, spouse or foundation could borrow against it.
Lily asked one question.
“Do I still have to go to that school?”
Claire answered:
“No.”
The relief on Lily’s face hurt Daniel more than any accusation.
She had believed the adults might still send her away after learning the truth.
The board ordered every false behavioral report removed.
Lily’s teachers would receive formal corrections.
No private settlement could hide what Vanessa had done.
Then the digital examiner opened Emma’s phone history.
The device had sent dozens of messages after Emma died.
Some went to Daniel.
Some went to the court.
