Chapter 3 - The Bad Child File
The folder held photographs, incident reports and draft court petitions.
Vanessa had been building a behavioral record against Lily for eight months.
A broken vase was photographed beside Lily’s backpack.
A pearl bracelet appeared beneath her bed.
A teacher’s ordinary note about classroom anxiety had been rewritten as evidence of dangerous emotional instability.
The cake was supposed to become the final public incident.
Daniel looked through the files.
“You planned to send her away.”
Vanessa remained composed.
“To an excellent residential academy.”
Lily gripped the edge of the dessert table.
“You said I was going for one weekend.”
The academy belonged to the Vale Family Foundation, controlled by Vanessa’s mother.
Children placed there could have their financial trusts managed through the foundation’s guardianship office.
If Lily entered as a behavioral resident, Vanessa would gain temporary authority over Emma’s voting shares.
Claire opened the draft petition.
It claimed Daniel could no longer manage Lily because grief had damaged his judgment.
Vanessa would become sole emergency guardian.
Daniel stared at her.
“You planned to remove both of us.”
“I planned to protect the company.”
“From an eight-year-old?”
“From the people using her shares.”
Lily looked at her father.
“Would you have signed it?”
Daniel saw his electronic signature on the preliminary care authorization.
Vanessa had presented it during a wedding-planning meeting.
She told him it approved therapy appointments and school transportation.
He signed between investor calls.
“I didn’t know what was attached.”
Lily’s voice was small.
“You didn’t read it?”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“No.”
Vanessa had deceived him.
But his carelessness had placed his child one signature away from losing her home.
Claire found a handwritten note inside Emma’s digital file.
They will call Lily difficult before they admit the land is hers to protect.
The employee apartments were scheduled to be sold that afternoon.
