Chapter 2 - Emma’s Phone

Daniel took the phone only after Vanessa placed it on the table herself.
Lily recognized the faded silver case immediately.
Her mother had covered one corner with a small blue flower sticker because Lily chose it at a grocery-store checkout.
Daniel had searched Emma’s hospital room for that phone.
The family attorney told him it was probably discarded with personal effects.
Vanessa claimed she found it months later inside an old storage box.
“Why didn’t you return it?” he asked.
“It contained private family information.”
“It belonged to my wife.”
“She was already gone.”
Lily lowered her eyes.
Vanessa’s words reduced Emma’s death to an opportunity.
Claire Whitmore, Daniel’s older sister and the family trust attorney, joined the confrontation from the poolside table. She examined the phone without opening private messages.
“The device was active yesterday.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“I charged it to check the files.”
“What files?”
“The ones Emma used to interfere with the foundation.”
Emma had served as chief financial officer of Whitmore Coastal Hotels. Before her illness, she opposed selling three apartment buildings reserved for hotel employees and retirees.
The apartments overlooked the California coast.
Their protected rents were worth almost nothing to investors.
The land beneath them was worth hundreds of millions.
Emma had controlled thirty-four percent of the company. After her death, those shares passed into trust for Lily.
Daniel served as guardian.
But a family-care amendment hidden inside his engagement documents would appoint Vanessa as temporary co-guardian after their marriage.
Lily’s supposed destructive behavior was essential.
A damaged painting.
A missing bracelet.
Now a ruined cake.
Each incident made private residential placement appear reasonable.
Daniel looked at the video again.
“You broke the platform so I would blame her.”
Vanessa answered:
“You always blame her before asking questions.”
The cruelty of the sentence came from its truth.
Then Emma’s phone unlocked automatically when Lily touched the flower sticker.
A deleted folder reappeared.

Its title contained only one word:
VANESSA.
