Chapter 1 - The Slap That Silenced the Ballroom

Victor stood beneath the chandeliers and pointed at eight-year-old Claire as though she had committed a felony.

“Your little thief ruined my reception!”

Rebecca answered evenly, “She took one wrapped chocolate.”

Victor slapped her.

The ballroom gasped, but Rebecca did not strike back. She immediately knelt beside Claire, who covered the bruise near her eyebrow.

“He grabbed me when I tried to leave,” Claire cried.

“Did he hurt you?”

Claire nodded.

Victor shouted, “She stole from me!”

Rebecca rose with one hand on Claire’s shoulder and opened her federal badge.

“You assaulted a child and struck a federal agent. Hands where I can see them.”

Two agents moved from the exits and secured him.

Then Claire pointed to the unopened chocolate on the floor.

“He said poor children should learn what happens when they touch rich people’s things.”

Inside the wrapper, investigators found a tiny memory card.

Victor’s face lost all color.
