Chapter 3 - The Judge Among the Guests

Judge Warren Hale stepped from the silent crowd and demanded that Rebecca release Victor.
He claimed Claire had a history of stealing and Angela had abandoned her.
Rebecca held up the petition.
“You signed this before the child touched the chocolate.”
Hale replied, “Families like Victor’s protect institutions. Workers often confuse discipline with discrimination.”
An older banquet server named Rosa stepped forward.
“We understand discipline. We arrive before dawn, leave after midnight and still get blamed when wealthy guests behave badly.”
Victor ordered security to remove her.
The guards refused.
Rosa revealed that Angela had discovered hotel scholarship funds were being redirected into Hale’s reelection campaign and Victor’s private club.
Parents who complained were threatened with custody reviews.
Children were branded troubled, dishonest or emotionally unstable.
Claire looked at the judge.
“You said nobody believes a maid’s daughter.”
Hale’s expression changed.
One plain-clothes agent recovered deleted audio from Victor’s phone.
Hale’s voice said, “Make the girl cry in public. Her mother will sign anything to keep her.”
