Chapter 4 - The Mother They Arrested First

Angela had been arrested after hotel attorneys accused her of stealing personnel files and taking Claire from an approved guardian.

The approved guardian was Victor.

Rebecca demanded the arrest warrant.

It described Angela fleeing the hotel with Claire before either had entered the ballroom.

“They wrote every event before it happened,” she said.

Victor looked at Angela’s housekeeping uniform with contempt.

“You cleaned our rooms and decided that made you qualified to examine executive accounts.”

Angela answered, “I cleaned the rooms where your donors left contracts open. Your arrogance provided better evidence than any warrant.”

The files proved employees paid into a childcare fund that was supposed to cover medical care, school costs and emergency housing.

Victor used it to finance receptions where he publicly praised himself for helping poor families.

When workers questioned missing money, Hale removed their children through emergency orders.

Rebecca ordered Angela released.

The ballroom guests watched deputies remove her handcuffs while Victor remained restrained.

Then Angela handed Rebecca a hotel key card.

“I found Claire’s name on a room that does not officially exist.”
