Chapter 5 - The Father Beneath the Reception

Federal agents opened the sealed basement suite and found Samuel Brooks alive, weak but conscious.

Victor’s family had confined him after he organized hotel workers and demanded repayment of stolen childcare deductions.

Claire had grown up believing he died in a construction accident.

Samuel looked at his daughter through the medical-room glass.

“They stole my name before they stole the money.”

Victor called the confinement protective treatment.

Samuel laughed bitterly.

“Rich people rename cages whenever prison sounds bad at a fundraiser.”

He revealed that workers had saved the hotel during bankruptcy by surrendering wages in exchange for forty percent ownership.

Victor’s father erased the agreement and replaced it with a charity program controlled by the family.

Angela had located the original employee charter.

Victor staged the chocolate incident to discredit her before she released it.

Rebecca asked where the document was hidden.

Samuel pointed toward Claire’s wrapped chocolate.

The memory card contained only half the archive.

The second half was sewn inside Claire’s white dress.

But when Angela checked the hem, the pocket was empty.

Claire whispered, “Judge Hale took something when he grabbed my shoulder.”

Hale was no longer inside the ballroom.
