Chapter 10 - Her Own Credentials

Claire stood completely still.
“I never exported Daniel’s voice.”
The system disagreed.
Her administrator account had entered the archive at 2:14 a.m. three nights earlier.
It copied Daniel’s proposal rehearsal.
Created the synthetic commands.
Opened the penthouse.
And filed the first draft of Claire’s conservatorship petition.
Malcolm recovered some of his composure.
“Perhaps this entire evening was your strategy.”
Vanessa stared at Claire.
“You planned to expose us?”
Claire’s grip tightened around the cane.
“I did not make myself helpless for three days to win a trust vote.”
Daniel stepped beside her.
But Claire did not let him speak for her.
“Open the biometric record.”
The authentication showed Claire’s voice, retinal scan and legal token.
All three matched.
Leah looked toward the smart cane.
“When was its software updated?”
Claire remembered.
Malcolm’s technology team updated the cane at her office two weeks earlier.
They claimed the update improved courtroom navigation.
The cane had captured Claire’s voice patterns and retinal data during calibration.
Her accommodations had been turned into tools for impersonating her.
Malcolm looked toward the exit.
The employee council had already frozen every door credential linked to the trust investigation.
Claire opened the final system log.
The administrator account did not send data directly to Malcolm.
It sent everything to a sealed legal client folder.
The client name appeared only after Claire entered her personal passphrase.
She spoke it clearly.
The file opened.
Daniel’s face changed first.
The client was not Vanessa.
Not Margaret.
Not Malcolm.
It was Claire Harrington.
A second legal identity had been registered under her name eighteen years earlier.
Same birthday.
Same Social Security number.
Different photograph.
The other woman had signed trust documents, medical declarations and employee-property sales for nearly two decades.
Claire whispered:
“Someone built a sighted version of me.”
Ranger rose.
He walked past Vanessa, Margaret and Malcolm.
Then stopped before Daniel’s closed ring box.
He scratched the floor three times.
Daniel opened it.
The engagement ring was gone.
In its place lay an old law-firm identification card bearing Claire’s name.
The photograph showed another brunette woman.
On the back was a handwritten message:
Ask Claire why her family needed two daughters with the same legal identity.
Margaret’s face collapsed.
Claire turned toward her mother’s voice.
“You know who she is.”
Margaret could no longer deny it.
“Yes.”
A pause.
May you like
“And she is the person who hired Vanessa to hide Ranger.”
