Chapter 2 - The Locked Cane
Daniel unlocked the cabinet.
Claire’s smart cane rested inside beside her leather legal case and a sealed engagement packet.
Ranger touched his nose to the cane handle.
Its location alarm stopped ringing.
Claire extended her hand.
Leah placed the cane safely into it.
The simple return of that familiar weight changed her posture. She no longer needed Daniel’s arm or a server’s whispered directions through a room designed without her in mind.
Vanessa noticed.
For three days, she had described Claire as disoriented.
Now the woman she called helpless stood upright and faced her without assistance.
Daniel opened the leather case.
“Why did you have Claire’s files?”
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“She brought confidential documents to a private celebration.”
“I brought them because you scheduled a trust vote during your proposal,” Claire said.
The Harrington family’s engagement announcement was linked to a corporate merger. Once Daniel publicly proposed to Vanessa, he would receive temporary voting proxies from several older relatives.
Vanessa’s family would receive matching authority.
But one approval remained necessary.
Claire’s.
She was not merely Daniel’s blind older sister.
She was general counsel to the Harrington Community Trust.
The trust owned employee housing, a disability legal clinic and twelve percent of Harrington Hotels.
Vanessa had needed Claire at the gala.
But she needed Claire unable to review documents.
Unable to reach the board table independently.
And visibly dependent enough that guests would accept someone signing on her behalf.
Claire touched the cut end of Ranger’s leash.
“Who removed him from my apartment?”
Vanessa answered:
“He became agitated.”
Leah shook her head.
“Ranger has never been removed from service for aggression.”
“He growled at me.”
“He was trained to block unauthorized access to Claire’s files.”
The distinction silenced the guests.
Then Claire opened the sealed packet.
