Chapter 9 - The Second Voice
The first recordings came from Malcolm’s kennel.
Ranger paced calmly.
A staff member repeatedly tried to remove his collar.
Vanessa’s voice instructed them not to injure him.
That did not excuse her.
It proved she understood the act was wrong enough to require careful language.
The second recording came from the hotel service elevator.
Margaret said:
“Lock the cane with the merger files. Claire will hear it, but she will not reach it without causing a scene.”
Claire’s face tightened.
Her own mother had designed her humiliation around the assumption that a blind woman would fear appearing helpless in public.
The final recording was different.
A man instructed someone to move Ranger from Malcolm’s kennel to Daniel’s private penthouse.
Daniel looked up.
“That never happened.”
Leah checked the tracker.
Ranger had remained inside the penthouse for eleven hours.
Only Daniel’s biometric elevator credential had opened the residence.
Daniel had been in Boston.
Flight records and dozens of witnesses confirmed it.
Claire listened to the recorded command again.
The voice was Daniel’s.
“Keep Ranger there until Claire signs.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“You knew.”
“No.”
Claire raised one hand.
“Play it again.”
The breath pattern was wrong.
One sentence contained fragments assembled from different recordings.
Someone had cloned Daniel’s voice.
His public speeches and proposal rehearsal provided hours of clean audio.
The penthouse system had also been programmed to accept the synthetic command.
Malcolm’s confidence finally cracked.
Claire turned toward him.
“Your firm licenses the voice-authentication software.”
He answered carefully:
“So does yours.”
Claire’s law firm had developed an accessibility platform that allowed blind attorneys to approve documents through secure voice identification.
Someone used that system to clone Daniel, open the penthouse and authenticate the conservatorship petition.
