Chapter 8 - The Employee Vote

The Community Trust’s misconduct clause activated immediately.
Any attempt to manipulate a disabled trustee’s accommodations in order to seize voting authority suspended the merger and transferred temporary control to an independent council.
The council included residents.
Hotel employees.
A disability-rights advocate.
An outside fiduciary.
And one family representative without a financial interest in the sale.
Daniel was disqualified because of his signature.
Margaret was disqualified because she knew Ranger’s location.
Vanessa and Malcolm were disqualified entirely.
Leah became the disability-access representative.
Margaret laughed bitterly.
“A dog trainer will help control a billion-dollar trust?”
Leah met her eyes.
“I understand the difference between support and control.”
Claire smiled faintly.
That difference had escaped every wealthy person involved.
Residents joined the emergency meeting from apartment kitchens and community rooms.
A retired bellman explained that his wage deductions continued for twenty-seven years.
A housekeeper described raising two children in an accessible unit after an injury.
A legally blind hotel accountant said Claire’s legal clinic had helped him fight a discriminatory dismissal.
The council voted.
The apartment sale was rejected.
Protected leases became permanent.
Residents received elected trust seats.
The accessibility fund was separated from family control.
Delayed building improvements were approved before any ceremonial spending.
Hotel workers received ownership statements reflecting their historical contributions.
Malcolm was removed as trust counsel.
Margaret lost her chairmanship.
Vanessa’s development fee disappeared.
Daniel’s merger proxy was suspended until he completed independent fiduciary training and restitution review.
Claire did not take sole control.
She transferred her temporary authority into the resident council.
No new wealthy savior replaced the old one.
The people who lived in the buildings would decide their future.
Ranger lay at Claire’s feet.
The room that had treated him as equipment now understood he was the reason the fraud failed.
Then Leah opened the final compartment of his damaged harness.

Inside was a small memory card.
It contained three days of audio.
