The white flowers came from employee money.
So did the rooftop champagne.
The private elevator.
The orchestra.
Even the luxury kennel used to hide Ranger.
The Employee Accessibility Fund had been created to install ramps, accessible bathrooms, visual alarms and transportation assistance across Harrington properties.
For two years, hotel employees had been told improvements were delayed because the fund lacked money.
A dishwasher still climbed a broken service ramp with crutches.
A retired housekeeper waited fourteen months for an accessible shower.
Leah’s father had requested an automatic entrance for Building Four after surgery.
The request was denied.
Meanwhile, the fund paid to remove Claire’s service dog from her.
The irony was so cruel that no one spoke.
Vanessa finally said:
“The gala promoted the development’s inclusion campaign.”
Claire faced her.
“You used accessibility money to make a blind woman appear incapable.”
Margaret called the accounting classification unfortunate.
Leah looked toward the servers beside the champagne tables.
“They were told tonight was a family event.”
“They were denied overtime.”
Daniel opened the payroll summary.
She was right.
Employees had financed the engagement and were being underpaid to work it.
His own signature appeared on the event budget.
He closed his eyes.
“I approved this.”
Claire said nothing.
He turned toward her.
“I didn’t read the funding schedule.”
“No.”
“I trusted the family office.”
“And workers paid for that trust.”
Daniel did not ask for immediate forgiveness.
He transferred the entire gala bill to his personal account.
All staff would receive overtime.
His penthouse, purchased partly through the same accessibility fund, entered sale review.
Every dollar would return before he received another family distribution.
Margaret stared at him.
“You are surrendering family assets because a trainer and a waitress questioned an invoice?”
Daniel looked at Leah.
“She found the cut leash.”
Then at Claire.
“And my sister found the law.”
Claire activated the trust’s emergency freeze.
The apartment sale stopped.
