THE DOG WHO HEARD THE WALL. / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT ETHAN COULD NOT REMEMBER.

The mansion physician examined Ethan’s recent medical records.

For six months, Victoria had encouraged him to take a nightly supplement prepared by the Blackwood wellness clinic.

The capsules contained a strong sleep medication capable of causing confusion and memory gaps.

On several nights, Ethan had awakened in unfamiliar rooms without understanding how he got there.

He dismissed the episodes as stress.

Victoria used those periods to place documents before him, obtain signatures, and move him through the estate while cameras recorded only selected moments.

The photograph of Ethan at the tunnel was real.

His intention was not.

He had been guided there while impaired and made to carry the stuffed rabbit after Julian hid a tracking device inside it.

The family intended to use Ethan as the final suspect if Charles’s survival became public.

The favored son had always been another disposable shield.

Authorities found Charles safely inside a foundation-owned clinic near Lake Washington.

Nora had intercepted the transport van after following the signal hidden in the rabbit.

Charles returned to the mansion in a wheelchair, alert and furious.

He confirmed the pension theft, the false death announcement, Nora’s confinement, Miguel’s framing, and the attempt to discredit Claire.

Victoria lost control of the Blackwood Foundation.

Julian and Sloan faced investigations for fraud, coercive guardianship, falsified records, and financial theft.

The mansion deed was enforced.

Mrs. Harper, Anna, the gardeners, drivers, cleaners, and retired domestic workers became the controlling beneficiaries of the estate’s employee-owned portion.

Luxury properties purchased with pension funds were placed into restitution.

Claire refused every apology offered by board members who had called her a thief hours earlier.

“They believed me only after the wealthy people confessed,” she said. “That is not respect.”

Ethan surrendered temporary control of his shares until an independent review determined how much harm his negligence enabled.

Nora returned through the front entrance instead of the service passage.

Ranger reached her first.

Charles thanked Lily for following the dog’s warning.

The child placed her stuffed rabbit beside his chair.

For one night, the truth appeared stronger than the Blackwood name.

Then Ranger lifted his head.

A faint tapping began inside the marble kitchen island.

Claire opened the lower cabinet and found another copper speaking tube.

A man whispered from the darkness beneath the house:

“Charles is not Ethan’s father.”
