Chapter 7 - THE SISTER WHO CALLED FROM THE DEAD.

Ethan took the phone.
“Nora?”
For several seconds, only breathing answered him.
Then his sister said his childhood nickname.
It was a name no recording or public archive contained.
Ethan sat down.
Nora was alive.
She had spent fifteen years moving between temporary homes while collecting evidence against the Blackwood Foundation.
The behavioral residence did not release her voluntarily.
Miguel Reyes helped her escape through a maintenance corridor.
Mrs. Harper provided food.
Anna’s mother hid her for several weeks.
Every person who helped Nora came from the class Victoria considered dependent and replaceable.
The wealthy relatives who praised family loyalty had signed documents declaring her unstable.
Nora explained that the tapping behind the bedroom wall was meant to lead Ranger to the ledger.
She had entered the service passage before Claire and Ethan went upstairs.
Julian nearly caught her.
She escaped through the kitchen tunnel while he planted the blue fabric and prepared to frame Claire.
Ethan asked why Nora said the assistant followed his orders.
Nora sent a photograph to Claire’s phone.
It showed Ethan meeting Victoria’s assistant outside a Seattle bank three days earlier.
Ethan remembered the meeting.
He believed he was authorizing a routine transfer connected to his mother’s retirement account.
The assistant gave him a sealed packet.
He signed the receipt without opening it.
That receipt was later attached to an instruction directing her to place the necklace in Claire’s car.
Again, Ethan’s carelessness had become someone else’s weapon.
He had not planned the frame.
But his habit of signing documents without questioning the family allowed it.
Nora refused to let him call that innocence.
“You benefited from never needing to know.”
Ethan lowered his eyes.
He asked where she was.
Nora said she would return only after the employee trustees gained control of the mansion.
Victoria stepped toward the phone.
“Nora, come home.”
Her daughter laughed once.
“You mean come back under your roof.”
Then the line disconnected.
Ranger ran toward the bedroom stairs and began barking again.

The tapping had resumed inside the wall.
But Nora had just said she was miles away.
