Claire’s father, Miguel Reyes, worked on the Blackwood mansion renovation fifteen years earlier.
He repaired cabinets, reinforced staircases, and restored the old service corridors.
Three weeks before Nora disappeared, Victoria accused him of stealing antique silver from the dining room.
Miguel denied it.
The family threatened criminal charges unless he signed a confidentiality agreement and left the property permanently.
No police report was filed.
No silver appeared in his possession.
Still, the accusation followed him through Seattle’s construction industry.
Wealthy clients stopped hiring him.
Claire grew up watching her father accept smaller jobs while the Blackwoods continued hosting charity dinners about economic opportunity.
Miguel never told her what truly happened.

Inside Nora’s letter was a hand-drawn map in Miguel’s handwriting.
It marked three hidden compartments inside the mansion.
The first held the pension ledger.
The second was beneath the library fireplace.
The third was labeled only: “Open if Ethan chooses the family name over the truth.”
Julian tried to take the map.
Ranger stepped between them and growled.
Victoria called the dog dangerous.
Claire answered, “He is the only one in this house who reacted correctly before seeing a bank statement.”
They opened the library compartment.
Inside was the antique silver Victoria accused Miguel of stealing.
Every piece remained wrapped in Blackwood linen.
Beside it lay a signed order instructing Sloan to use the false accusation against Miguel if he helped Nora.
Claire’s humiliation turned into quiet anger.
Her father lost his reputation because rich people needed a poor man whose guilt would sound believable.
Victoria did not apologize.
She said Miguel had been compensated through his final paycheck.
Claire placed the order on the table.
“You paid him for labor. You never paid him for the life you damaged.”
Then Sloan discovered another item inside the compartment.
It was the original deed to the mansion.
The document transferred ownership of the domestic wing and surrounding land to the Blackwood Employee Pension Trust.
