Behind the drywall was a narrow service corridor running vertically beside the chimney.
The Blackwoods had once used hidden routes so servants could enter bedrooms without crossing formal hallways.
Family histories described the design as elegant efficiency.
Claire saw it differently.
The mansion had been built so wealthy people could receive service without having to acknowledge the people providing it.
Ranger entered first with controlled steps.
The passage led to a small windowless room above the kitchen wing.
Inside were a folding chair, bottled water, a battery lamp, and several recent food wrappers.
Someone had been living or working there.
On the floor rested a leather ledger stamped with the Blackwood Foundation seal.
The first pages listed pension contributions from housekeepers, drivers, gardeners, and kitchen staff.
The later pages showed millions transferred into private development companies owned by Victoria and Julian.
Mrs. Harper stared at the numbers.
Her husband had worked for the Blackwoods for thirty-six years.
When he died, the family told her the pension fund had been depleted by market losses.
She accepted a smaller payment because challenging the Blackwoods would have cost her home.
The ledger suggested the money had purchased a ski property in Colorado.
Julian called the figures fabricated.
Victoria said Nora had always resented the family and may have created false records before disappearing.
Then Claire found a recorder beneath the folding chair.
Nora’s voice played through the tiny speaker.
“If you found this room, they are still stealing from the staff.”
She described discovering the pension transfers fifteen years earlier.
She planned to expose them at a family board meeting.
Before she could attend, Victoria accused her of addiction, instability, and theft.
The recording ended with footsteps approaching Nora.
