Chapter 2 - THE WIFE THEY ACCUSED FIRST.

By sunrise, the mansion bedroom contained more attorneys than police officers.
Ethan’s mother, Victoria Blackwood, arrived in a charcoal coat without asking whether Claire was safe.
She looked at the damaged wall, the brass bell, and Nora’s blue fabric.
Then she looked at Claire.
“You designed restorations for historic homes. You knew how to build a hidden opening.”
The accusation was immediate and deliberate.
Claire came from a working-class family in Tacoma.
Her father installed cabinets.
Her mother cleaned offices at night.
Victoria had never forgiven Ethan for marrying a woman who understood the mansion as a structure rather than a symbol of superiority.
She claimed Claire staged the mystery to pressure Ethan into transferring the house.
Julian Blackwood, Ethan’s younger brother, supported her.
He reminded everyone that Claire had recently questioned the family trust and asked why domestic employees received no pension increases despite the mansion’s rising value.
To the Blackwoods, concern for workers became suspicious when voiced by someone born without money.
Victoria ordered security to search Claire’s office.
They opened her drawers, photographed her bank statements, and carried her renovation tools into the bedroom as though a modest savings account proved criminal ambition.
No one searched Julian.
No one questioned how Nora’s fabric entered a wall sealed before Claire moved into the house.
Mrs. Harper, the senior housekeeper, stood near the doorway twisting her apron.
Anna, the younger maid, finally spoke.
“Mrs. Blackwood, the wall was opened last night before Mr. and Mrs. Blackwood went upstairs.”
Victoria turned toward her.
“Be careful. Your mother’s apartment belongs to our foundation.”
The warning silenced Anna for only a moment.
She pointed to a maintenance camera above the hall molding.
The footage showed Julian entering the bedroom at 7:14 p.m. with a narrow leather case.
He remained inside for eleven minutes.
Julian claimed he came to leave Ethan a birthday gift.
Claire asked where the gift was.
He had no answer.

Then Ranger growled at Julian’s leather shoes.
A thin line of gray wall dust covered both soles.
