Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO FELL BEFORE GRACE.
Margaret immediately called Rosa a liar.
“You clean rooms. You do not rewrite family history.”
Rosa looked up from the foyer floor.
“I cleaned the bloodless stories you left behind.”
Twenty-three years earlier, Julian’s aunt Caroline had fallen from the same balcony after confronting Margaret about missing employee pension funds. The family called it a tragic accident caused by medication and grief.
Rosa had been a junior maid then.
She remembered seeing Margaret collect a silk scarf from the railing moments after Caroline fell.
Julian stared at his mother.
“You told me Aunt Caroline was alone.”
Margaret answered with cold contempt.
“She was unstable. She married beneath herself, embarrassed this family, and started believing servants deserved ownership.”
Grace looked at the three employees above.
“What did Caroline find?”
A groundskeeper named Eli removed an old brass key from his pocket.
Caroline had hidden a lockbox beneath the staircase before she died. Rosa and the others had protected it because they knew the Whitmores would fire anyone who opened it.
Margaret ordered them to surrender the key.
Julian stood between her and the staff.
“No one obeys you tonight.”
Inside the lockbox were pension ledgers, property deeds, and a sealed letter addressed to Julian.
The first line read:
“Your mother did not inherit this mansion.”

“She took it from the woman who raised you.”
