Chapter 4 - THE MARRIAGE MARGARET TRIED TO ERASE.
Margaret called the ledger fraudulent.
Grace looked at her steadily.
“You use that word every time a poor person’s name appears beside property.”
Julian demanded the family attorney come to the mansion.
Margaret refused, claiming the scandal would destroy the Whitmore name and cost employees their jobs.
Rosa answered from the staircase.
“You stole our pensions, then hid behind our paychecks whenever consequences came.”
Caroline’s letter contained another secret.
Before her death, she had married Thomas Cole, Beatrice’s son and Grace’s late father.
That meant Grace was not an outsider who had married into the estate.
She was Beatrice’s granddaughter and the legal descendant of the woman who owned it.
Margaret’s hatred had never been about class alone.
Grace’s marriage to Julian could reunite the property rights Margaret had spent decades separating.
Julian looked at Grace, stunned.
“Your father never told you?”
“He told me wealthy families use silence like a deed,” she whispered. “I thought he was warning me about people in general.”
Margaret laughed bitterly.
“Your father was a gardener’s son who wanted a mansion.”
Grace stepped closer.
“My father repaired roofs here while you hosted preservation galas beneath them.”
Then the attorney arrived carrying the original marriage certificate.
Caroline and Thomas had a child before Caroline died.
That child had been placed in a private adoption.
The name had been sealed.
