Chapter 3 - THE FOOTAGE SOMEONE CUT.
Amanda called the smile a coincidence.
Margaret demanded the discussion end before guests began recording rumors.
Michael refused.
He had spent his life watching the Carter family protect appearances faster than people.
His sister Claire had once accused the family foundation of stealing scholarship funds.
Margaret called her unstable.
The board called her ungrateful.
When Claire married Daniel, the family removed her photograph from the foyer.
Now Lily stood beneath the same empty space.
The security director recovered the deleted six seconds from a backup server.
The footage showed Amanda reaching beneath her belt before Lily approached.
She pulled out the tiny black wire, looped it around the loose thread, then deliberately stepped toward the child.
Lily noticed the snag and offered to remove it.
Amanda had created the moment.
But why?
Michael paused the image.
At the end of the wire was a miniature recording device.
Amanda admitted wearing it but claimed she feared Lily might threaten her.
Lily began crying.
“I never threatened anyone.”
Then the device connected automatically to the mansion speaker system.
A man’s voice filled the foyer.
“Once the child is removed, the trust becomes yours.”
