Chapter 5 - THE ACCIDENT THEY CALLED BAD LUCK.

Daniel Brooks died when a hydraulic lift failed at an auto shop owned by a Carter subsidiary.
The official report blamed employee error.
Margaret told Lily that her father had ignored safety rules.
She repeated the story whenever the child asked why the family never honored him.
Michael reopened the file.
Maintenance records showed Daniel reported the lift three times.
Repairs were delayed because the company planned to sell the property.
The same attorney who coached Amanda signed the settlement denying liability.
Daniel’s widow received almost nothing.
Claire then began investigating the family’s housing and scholarship accounts.
Six months later, she died in a highway crash ruled accidental.
The room grew colder.
Margaret accused Michael of turning grief into conspiracy.
Lily looked at her grandmother.
“You called Dad careless because he was poor.”
Margaret said the family had supported Lily after both deaths.
Michael answered, “You took her parents, then called shelter generosity.”
The security director found another deleted file inside Amanda’s recorder.
It captured Margaret discussing the apartment sale.
Her voice was clear:
“Lily must look unstable before the board meeting.”
Then another woman spoke.
May you like
It was Claire.
And the recording was dated three days after her funeral.
