Chapter 4 - THE TRUST BEHIND THE ACCUSATION.

The Carter Family Trust granted Lily shares inherited from Claire.

Those shares were small in number but powerful enough to block the sale of three apartment buildings owned by the family foundation.

The buildings housed hundreds of working-class tenants in Atlanta.

Amanda and the family attorney wanted to sell them to a luxury developer.

Claire had opposed the plan before her death.

Lily inherited her vote.

Because Lily was a minor, Michael temporarily controlled the shares—but only while she remained under family guardianship.

If Lily were removed for being dangerous, Amanda would become guardian after the baby was born.

The staged pin incident was meant to prove Lily posed a threat to the pregnancy.

Amanda called the interpretation absurd.

Then Michael opened the recording device’s stored files.

One contained a rehearsal.

Amanda practiced the exact line she had shouted in the foyer.

“What are you doing?”

Another voice coached her to step backward, protect her belly, and appear frightened.

Margaret looked away.

Michael noticed.

“You knew.”

She denied it.

Lily reached into her jacket and removed a folded card Claire had hidden years earlier.

It contained one sentence:

“If Margaret protects the sale, ask who paid for Daniel’s accident.”
