They delayed repairs because acknowledging the defect would reduce the property’s sale value.
Claire also discovered scholarship money had been redirected into the same development fund.
Students from low-income neighborhoods lost tuition while Carter donors received tax benefits and gala awards.
Margaret called the transfers temporary.
Claire called them theft.
The recording instructed Michael to find a blue ledger hidden inside the mansion’s old nursery.
Amanda protested that Claire had manipulated him from the grave.
Michael answered, “She trusted evidence because she knew this family would attack her character.”
They opened the nursery wall safe.
Inside lay the ledger and photographs of tenants facing eviction.
One photograph showed Amanda meeting the luxury developer months before she joined the Carter family.

The marriage followed later.
