Each dog carried the name Brutus and a hidden archive inside its collar.

The château opened as a survivor center, with no service entrance and no family name above the gate.

At the opening ceremony, Brutus sat beside Lily beneath the warm lanterns.

For one evening, the estate finally belonged to those who built it.
Then Brutus stood suddenly and faced the misty road.
Another barefoot child knelt beyond the gates holding a silver collar.
The dog began to whine.
The boy looked at Alexander and said, “My mother told me Brutus would remember me too.”
Alexander asked her name.
The boy answered, “Margaret Blackwood.”
