Chapter 9 - The Mother Who Chose Between Twins
Teresa explained that Margaret threatened to take both babies.
She believed surrendering Alexander would allow her to escape with Elena.
Instead, the court removed Elena weeks later and erased Teresa from both lives.
Alexander’s voice broke.
“You looked at two newborns and decided I was the one you could lose.”
Teresa accepted the cruelty of the truth.
“Yes. Poverty put the knife in my hand, but I still made the choice.”
Elena refused to let Margaret weaponize Teresa’s guilt.
“You created the threat, offered the bargain and then spent decades blaming the woman trapped inside it.”
The worker council chose accountability over family mythology.
Teresa could testify and contribute, but she would not automatically control the trust.
Gabriel faced fraud charges.
Conrad and the family physician entered plea agreements without full immunity.
Margaret was indicted for kidnapping, forced guardianships, unlawful confinement and pension theft.
At trial, she called the employees incapable of governing a national company.
Rosa answered from the witness stand.
“We survived your wages, raised your children and protected your dogs. The only thing we could not manage was your greed.”
The jury convicted Margaret.
Workers celebrated outside the courthouse, but Lily remained quiet.
Justice could punish a dynasty; it could not manufacture an uncomplicated childhood.
Then Brutus’s veterinary records were introduced.
He had not originally belonged to Elena.
His first registered owner was Teresa.
The dog was thirty years younger than the date on the form made possible.
Someone had reused Brutus’s identity across generations.
