Chapter 8 - The Father Who Sold His Daughter’s Name
Gabriel Hart stepped from the limousine wearing a tailored suit purchased by the Blackwood Foundation.
Lily knew him only from one faded photograph.
Elena had told her he died in a construction accident.
Gabriel admitted accepting money to disappear after Lily’s birth.
Margaret threatened to accuse him of kidnapping unless he surrendered parental rights.
He took the payment and built a new life in California.
Lily stared at him.
“You were alive every birthday.”
Gabriel answered, “I was young and terrified.”
Alexander’s voice cut through him.
“You were terrified of prison, so you sentenced a child to grief.”
Gabriel claimed he returned to help expose Margaret.
Elena did not soften.
“You returned after the company froze your payments.”
Teresa produced bank statements proving he had received monthly money for nine years.
Gabriel had also reported Elena’s location before the motel fire.
Lily turned away from him.
Biology did not earn immediate access.
A court ordered no contact until independent review.
The worker council voted to convert the château into transitional housing and a legal center for families harmed by fraudulent guardianships.
Blackwood portraits were removed.
Staff members entered through the central doors while Margaret was transported through the service gate.
The reversal was public and deeply satisfying.
Then Gabriel offered prosecutors a final recording.
It showed Teresa meeting Margaret before the twins’ birth.
Teresa accepted a leather case filled with cash and said, “Take Alexander. Leave Elena with me.”
Alexander looked at his mother.
