Victoria did not deny sending the message.
She claimed she had been protecting the Price family from a misunderstanding that could destroy investors’ confidence.
According to her, Claire had become emotionally confused during her pregnancy.
Daniel had only tried to comfort her while Ethan remained away.
The explanation placed every burden on Claire.
Daniel’s words became comfort.
Claire’s fear became confusion.
Victoria’s threats became reputation management.
Emma asked why a family’s public image required a pregnant woman to accept humiliation in silence.
Victoria looked at her daughter with familiar contempt.
“You abandoned your responsibilities when you married beneath this family.”
The room tightened around the sentence.
Emma’s husband taught history at a public high school.
He coached students without pay and cared for Lily while Emma worked at a nonprofit legal clinic.
To Victoria, none of that counted as success because it did not produce private jets, board seats, or magazine profiles.
Lily looked down at the flag pin on her dress.
She had worn it because her father gave it to her after teaching a lesson about courage.
Victoria saw only something cheap pinned beside expensive lace.
Claire finally admitted that Daniel had approached her during a brief separation from Ethan.
He claimed Ethan planned to divorce her and remove her from the family healthcare plan.
He showed her messages that appeared to come from Ethan.
Claire believed her marriage was already over.
When she learned she was pregnant, Daniel produced a private test claiming he was the father.
He promised to protect her if she signed a temporary guardianship agreement.
Daniel called her a liar.
Claire opened the folder beneath her chair.
Inside were printed messages from Ethan’s number.
Emma examined them.
The timestamps fell on days Ethan had been working inside a factory with no cellular service.
Someone had fabricated the messages.
Mr. Bennett checked the metadata.
They were created on a laptop registered to Daniel’s office.
Claire covered her face.
Daniel had not merely taken advantage of a broken marriage.
He had manufactured the break.
Then Lily spoke again.
“Grandma knew.”
Victoria turned toward her.
Lily explained that she had heard Victoria tell Daniel, “Claire will believe whatever keeps her baby safe.”
Emma asked when Lily heard it.
