Chapter 5 - THE PLAN THAT STARTED BEFORE THE BABY.
The Price family attorney, Martin Cole, was called into the dining room.
He arrived expecting a private dispute and found the gala guests staring at him like a witness entering court.
Victoria ordered him to explain that the guardianship agreement was routine.
Martin opened the document and immediately stopped speaking.
The papers did not merely give Daniel temporary authority over the unborn child’s trust.
They transferred Claire’s voting shares, Ethan’s proxy rights, and control of a medical-benefit fund to Daniel if the marriage ended before the baby’s birth.
The agreement assumed Daniel would later be declared the biological father.
Daniel had prepared to gain control of Ethan’s branch of the company before any valid test existed.
Martin said his office had never drafted the document.
The law-firm logo had been copied from an older trust file.
Victoria claimed Daniel acted alone.
Daniel stared at his mother.
For the first time, the favorite son understood that her protection had limits.
Emma asked Mr. Bennett to search the family tablet for deleted communications.
Victoria ordered him to stop.
He continued.
The recovered messages showed Victoria instructing Daniel to keep Claire frightened, isolate Ethan from the family, and remove Lily whenever important conversations occurred.
One message referred to Lily as “Emma’s little witness.”
Another said children from modest households were easier to discredit because wealthy guests assumed they wanted attention.
Emma read that sentence twice.
Her mother had not simply looked down on Lily.
She had calculated how class prejudice could be used against an eight-year-old.
The guests began avoiding Victoria’s eyes.
Their silence no longer protected her.
It exposed them.
Then the doors opened again.
Ethan Price entered in a dark business suit, still carrying a factory identification badge.
He had flown from Michigan after receiving Emma’s backup file.
Claire stood too quickly, one hand on the table.
Ethan looked at her, then at Daniel.
Daniel tried to speak.
Ethan placed a sealed medical report beside the recording tablet.
“I already know what he told you.”
Claire’s face collapsed.
