The Blackwood family had held Margaret’s funeral in a private chapel.
Ethan remembered the closed casket, the lilies, and Julian standing beside their father while attorneys guided every conversation.
At the time, Ethan was told Margaret died abroad after a sudden neurological illness.
He had been discouraged from viewing the body.
The explanation was that travel damage made an open casket impossible.
Now Julian claimed Margaret survived.
He said their father placed her in a private medical residence after she threatened to expose confidential family matters.
Ethan felt the kitchen narrow around him.
“You let me believe she was dead?”
Julian insisted the decision had been made for the family’s stability.
Margaret had discovered that Blackwood Development was forcing elderly tenants from subsidized housing so the properties could be converted into luxury residences.
She wanted to release the records.
Their father called her emotionally unstable.
Doctors connected to the family agreed.
A court approved a private guardianship.
Her death announcement followed six months later.
Lily listened from behind Ethan, frightened but alert.
Mrs. Harper confessed that she had visited Margaret at the residence for years.
The older woman remained intelligent and aware.
She wrote letters to Ethan.
None reached him.
Julian said the letters were dangerous because they encouraged Ethan to turn against his own family.
Ethan stared at his brother.
“You decided which truth I was allowed to hear.”
Julian replied that leadership required difficult decisions.
Anna looked disgusted.
“In this house, difficult decisions always hurt the people without money.”
Ethan unfolded the medicine packet.
A handwritten number appeared inside.
It matched the code for a storage drawer beneath the kitchen island.
Mrs. Harper entered the code.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside lay a stack of letters addressed to Ethan in Margaret’s handwriting.
The top envelope was dated three days earlier.
