Chapter 9 - THE TUNNEL UNDER THE MANSION.
Mrs. Harper recognized the sound.
The Blackwood mansion contained an old service tunnel connecting the kitchen cellar to the family archive building.
Staff once used it to move food and coal without crossing formal rooms.
It had been sealed decades earlier.
Julian had quietly reopened it.
Ethan ordered the kitchen secured while Victor and Anna checked the cellar entrance.
The tunnel was empty, but fresh wheel marks crossed the floor.
Someone had removed boxes from the archive during the confrontation.
Those boxes contained original housing deeds, employee-pension records, and evidence linking board members to the redevelopment scheme.
The person outside the frosted door had not come only to witness Margaret’s return.
The confrontation was a distraction.
Sloan claimed he knew nothing about the tunnel.
Margaret opened one of her old letters and showed Ethan a hand-drawn map.
The passage ended beneath the Blackwood Foundation headquarters three blocks away.
Anna found a dropped security badge near the tunnel stairs.
It belonged to the board chair.
He had entered the mansion before dawn.
Lily crouched beside her stuffed rabbit and noticed a line of gray dust across its ear.
The same dust covered Julian’s shoes.
He had used the tunnel recently.
Julian admitted moving records but claimed he did it to protect the company from Margaret’s revenge.
Ethan asked whether he understood how many families had lost homes because those records remained hidden.
Julian’s answer revealed everything.
“Those people were compensated.”
Mrs. Harper said the relocation checks never arrived.
Her sister had lived in one of the buildings.
She died in a motel while waiting for housing assistance the foundation publicly claimed to provide.
Julian looked uncomfortable, not remorseful.
To him, suffering became unfortunate only when someone described it inside his kitchen.
Ethan ordered all Blackwood properties and accounts preserved for investigators.
Victor demanded the tunnel be searched immediately.
Then Lily’s stuffed rabbit began ringing.
A phone had been hidden inside it while everyone watched the cellar.
The screen displayed a live video.
The board chair stood inside the archive room beside stacks of burning paper.
