Chapter 7 - THE DEAD WOMAN WHO WALKED INTO THE KITCHEN.

Margaret entered slowly, leaning on Victor’s arm.

She was thinner than Ethan remembered, but her eyes were clear.

Ethan crossed the kitchen and stopped in front of her.

For twelve years, he had imagined what he would say if she returned.

The words disappeared.

Margaret touched his face.

“I wrote to you every week.”

Ethan looked at Julian, Sloan, and Mrs. Harper.

Everyone had known more than he did.

Some had acted from greed.

Others acted from fear.

The result was the same.

A son lost his mother while living inside a mansion filled with employees carrying her letters.

Victor remained near the door.

He remembered enough to confirm that Ethan’s father arranged the boating accident after Victor discovered the housing theft.

Sloan prepared the papers that transferred Victor’s shares while he remained unconscious.

Julian was later raised as the official son of the man who stole from his biological father.

Julian’s anger turned toward Margaret.

“You abandoned me.”

She answered quietly.

“I tried to take you with me. Your legal father threatened to place Ethan in an institution if I refused the arrangement.”

The family had divided two boys and taught each one a different lie.

Ethan was told Julian was his brother.

Julian was told power proved he belonged.

Neither was given the truth.

Margaret said Julian’s blood did not disqualify him from the family.

His choices did.

He had repeated the same system that damaged them both.

Julian pointed toward the cup.

“The tablet would not have harmed him.”

Margaret looked at Lily.

“You used a child’s home to frighten her caregiver.”

Mrs. Harper revealed that Julian had threatened to close the staff apartment wing if she refused.

Margaret placed the mansion deed on the island.

“He cannot close homes he does not own.”

The staff pension trust legally controlled the property.

For the first time, Mrs. Harper realized Julian could no longer remove her with a phone call.

Then Victor opened a sealed folder.

It contained Blackwood board records signed that morning.

Ethan had already been declared mentally unfit.

His voting rights had transferred to Julian before Lily entered the kitchen.
