Chapter 5 - THE PHOTOGRAPH INSIDE THE TOY RABBIT.
Lily held the gray stuffed rabbit against her chest and stepped backward.
The toy had belonged to Margaret.
Mrs. Harper gave it to Lily on her fourth birthday, saying it had been stored in the attic for years.
Lily admitted that the rabbit made a clicking sound when she squeezed its left paw.
Ethan examined the seam and found a tiny brass clasp hidden beneath the fur.
Inside the stuffed body was an old photograph and a miniature audio cassette.
The photograph showed Margaret beside Victor Blackwood at a private hospital.
In her arms was a newborn baby wearing a bracelet engraved with the name Julian.
The date was six weeks after Victor’s reported death.
On the back, Margaret had written that Victor survived the boating accident but was kept hidden until the family could move his shares.
Ethan looked at Julian.
“You knew your father was alive?”
Julian denied it.
His anger finally sounded like fear.
The cassette was older than any recorder in the kitchen, but Anna remembered a vintage player in the mansion library.
Julian tried to leave.
Ethan locked the kitchen doors.
“You ordered someone to drug me. You’re staying.”
Julian laughed bitterly.
“You think one photograph changes who owns this house?”
He reminded Ethan that servants, children, and a woman declared dead would never defeat signed corporate records.
His confidence came from the same class system that had silenced Margaret.
Poor witnesses were emotional.
Children were confused.
Employees were dependent.
Only documents prepared by expensive attorneys were treated as truth.
Anna brought the cassette player.
Margaret’s voice filled the kitchen.
She explained that Victor discovered the housing fraud and intended to expose Ethan’s father.
Before he could speak, someone arranged the boating accident.
Victor survived but suffered memory loss.
Margaret hid him inside a rehabilitation center until he recovered.
Then the recording stopped abruptly.
A second voice entered.
It belonged to Ethan’s late father.
“If Ethan hears this, Margaret failed.”
The recording ended with a door slamming.
Julian looked stunned.
Then Lily pointed toward the photograph.
A man was visible in the reflection of the hospital window.
