Chapter 1 - THE VOICE UNDER THANKSGIVING DINNER.

Clara’s silver spoon struck the polished floor.
Three faint knocks answered from beneath the dining room.
She knelt safely beside the vent and heard Margaret’s frightened voice.
“Clara… do not let them sign my house away.”
Daniel dropped his champagne glass.
“Move away from that floor!”
Clara tapped three times. Three taps returned—the private signal her grandmother had taught her.
Victoria called it old pipes. Richard quietly pulled the property documents closer.
Mr. Hale unlocked the concealed panel with a brass key. Staff secured the opening before helping Margaret into the light. She was pale but conscious, wrapped in a thin blanket.
“They changed my competency records,” she said. “They planned to sell Hawthorne House tonight.”
Richard called her confused.
Margaret produced the original trust folder. Its clause stripped any beneficiary who coerced her of every right.
Then a lullaby drifted from behind the cellar wall.
Clara gripped her handmade scarf.
