Victoria admitted visiting Ruth but claimed she was trying to protect Clara from a custody scandal.
“I raised her, loved her and gave her every advantage.”
Rebecca answered, “You gave her privilege and took away her history.”
Clara chose neither side. Her advocate arranged contact at her pace; no adult gained authority through money or biology.
The audit revealed Victoria’s marriage to Daniel had been arranged after Judge Cross learned Rebecca owned the mansion parcel. By placing Victoria as Clara’s legal mother, the family hoped to control any claim the child inherited.
Daniel had believed the marriage united two old Connecticut families.
Rebecca looked around the room.
“It united lawyers around land taken from a caregiver.”
Then the trust council found that Rebecca had accepted a two-hundred-thousand-dollar settlement years earlier.
She lowered her eyes.
“I took it when they threatened to remove Clara from the state.”
A former housekeeper confronted her.
“While you stayed silent, they used the clinic against others.”
Rebecca surrendered the money for restitution.
