Chapter 9 - THE CHILD THEY PLANNED TO CONTROL.
Daniel admitted finding Samuel’s letter before the dinner.
He had hidden it because he feared Clara’s ownership would trigger public scandal and collapse the family company.
“I planned to tell her when she was older.”
Rebecca’s anger sharpened.
“You mean when lawyers had trained her to surrender it politely.”
Daniel placed every asset tied to the parcel under court control. His cooperation did not erase concealment.
The worker-resident council rejected the idea that Clara should personally own the mansion.
Clara agreed.
“I do not want a house if everyone else has to beg to stay.”
The council converted Hawthorne House into cooperative housing, an elder-rights clinic and a public archive. Pension deductions were restored, coerced transfers voided and residents returned to homes taken through Dr. Foster’s evaluations.
Judge Cross, Richard, Victoria and clinic executives faced separate charges. Daniel, Margaret and Rebecca remained under review for their choices.
Then forensic staff examined the unsigned sale contract.
The buyer was not a corporation.
