He intended to place Hawthorne House in Clara’s name, remove Rebecca and Margaret through competency orders, then control the child’s assets as family guardian.
“You would have made her rich on paper and powerless in practice,” the prosecutor said.
Clara remained with an independent guardian while safe family arrangements were reviewed. Rebecca rebuilt contact without demanding the title of mother. Victoria faced the harm caused by raising Clara inside a lie. Daniel lost executive authority and testified about every document he ignored.
The mansion became a worker-resident cooperative. The silver spoon, brass key, scarf and forged competency file entered its public archive.
A plaque read:
“THEY CALLED THE WOMEN CONFUSED BECAUSE THEIR MEMORY STOOD BETWEEN A RICH FAMILY AND A STOLEN HOUSE.”
At the first council dinner, Clara heard three knocks beneath the floor again.
Mr. Hale opened the restored vent.
