Chapter 5 - THE MOTHER WHO WATCHED FROM THE BALCONY.

A soft movement came from the upper gallery.
Lily looked up first.
“Mommy.”
A veiled woman stepped from behind the carved railing. Anna Mercer was alive.
Ethan did not rush toward her.
“You stood above your own memorial while our daughter introduced herself to me.”
Anna removed the veil, her face pale with grief.
“I needed Eleanor to admit the trust transfer in front of witnesses.”
Ruth’s expression sharpened.
“You needed a six-year-old child to carry the first accusation into a room full of hostile adults.”
Anna knelt at a distance and let Lily choose whether to approach. Lily stayed beside Ethan.
No one offered Anna instant forgiveness.
She surrendered the trust evidence and accepted an independent review of the years she remained hidden.
Then Ethan asked why the red heart had been enough to identify Lily.
Anna answered, “Because it was not our private symbol.”
She opened an old employee ledger.

Every worker who surrendered wages had signed beside the same red heart.
The first signature belonged to Ethan’s father.
