Chapter 8 - THE SIGNATURE ETHAN COULD NOT ESCAPE.
Ethan remembered signing a restructuring package during the hotel recession. He had never read the employee-trust schedule attached to it.
Anna’s voice remained cold.
“You had lawyers, time and authority. Workers had eviction deadlines.”
Ethan did not defend himself.
“My ignorance benefited me. Put every decision I signed under review.”
The council suspended his voting rights and appointed outside counsel. Lily remained with her licensed guardian while a family court evaluated safe contact at her pace.
Eleanor tried to shift all blame onto Ethan.
Ruth stopped her.
“His responsibility does not reduce yours.”
The audit found Anna had also accepted a secret settlement from the foundation after Lily’s birth. The money paid for shelters, legal fees and Lily’s care, but Anna had not told the workers whose trust financed part of it.
Anna placed every dollar under restitution review.
Then Charles Mercer arrived in person carrying a second red-heart drawing.
It had been made by another child.
