Chapter 6 - THE FATHER WHO STOLE WITH A SMILE.

Ethan had believed his father, William Mercer, created the worker trust out of generosity. The ledger showed something different.

William asked employees to draw the heart beside wage waivers because many spoke limited English or could not afford legal advice. He called it a symbol of family loyalty.

Anna said, “He turned affection into consent.”

Eleanor defended her late husband.

“He kept everyone employed.”

Ruth replied, “He kept their labor and postponed their ownership.”

Forensic review proved several heart marks had been copied onto new transfer pages after workers died. William’s signature authorized the substitutions.

Ethan surrendered family assets connected to the fraud and asked that his father’s portrait be removed from the memorial wall.

Then Lily opened the teddy bear’s stitched paw. Inside was a tiny brass key.

Anna went pale.

“I never put that there.”

Ruth recognized the crest stamped on it.

The key belonged to the old servants’ archive beneath the reception hall.

Eleanor whispered, “That room was sealed before Lily was born.”
