Chapter 7 - THE RECORDING THAT TURNED THEM AGAINST EACH OTHER.
Vivian claimed the sentence had been taken out of context.
She said “alive in the company” meant Daniel would no longer retain operational authority after the acquisition.
But the recording continued.
Owen asked what would happen if Daniel refused to retire.
Vivian replied that his clinic records could be altered to make the board question his capacity.
They had planned to portray Ella’s father as cognitively unfit, remove him from leadership, and pressure Ella into supporting Owen as the new executive authority.
The same people who had insulted Ella for lacking sophistication had expected to use her loyalty against her.
Blair admitted she had recorded the conversation because Owen had begun hiding financial information from her.
She did not apologize for pulling Ella’s chair.
She said Vivian promised her a place in the family if she helped break Ella’s confidence before the signing.
The cruelty was supposed to make Ella feel socially inferior, emotionally unstable, and desperate to prove she belonged.
Vivian called Blair trash and accused her of betraying the family.
Blair’s eyes hardened.
“You invited me when you needed me. I became trash when I stopped obeying.”
Ella saw no innocence in Blair, but she recognized the class weapon Vivian used.
Women from powerful families often exploited poorer women, then condemned them for accepting the arrangement.
Owen tried to take the recording device.
Mr. Hale placed himself between them.
For decades, the steward had remained professionally invisible while serving the Ward family.
Owen had mistaken dignity for weakness.
“Sit down, Mr. Price.”
Something in his voice made Owen obey.
Ella called her father.
Daniel Ward answered from the hotel’s private conference room.
He had heard everything through Mr. Hale’s open phone line.
He told Ella he trusted her judgment completely.
She ended the call and faced the Price family.
“The acquisition is canceled. The forgery is being reported. The pension evidence goes to federal investigators.”
Owen smiled bitterly.
“Then you just destroyed your own family too.”
