Chapter 2 - The Widow Who Owned the Story
Victoria demanded that security arrest Emily for stealing confidential estate documents.
She claimed Emily had broken into Charles Hartwell’s private office because she could not accept being disinherited.
Several relatives immediately supported her.
To them, Victoria was a respected widow in a tailored suit.
Emily was still the daughter of Charles’s first wife—a public-school teacher from a working-class Boston neighborhood whom the Hartwells had mocked for using coupons at family dinners.
Victoria pointed toward Emily’s powder-blue gown.
“You wear our money, sleep beneath our roof and then accuse us of theft. Women like you always confuse access with ownership.”
Emily’s eyes burned.
“My mother worked for everything she had. You married my father and called his employees servants before the wedding cake was cut.”
Daniel ordered the security chief to examine the mansion cameras.
The footage showed Victoria entering Charles’s study at midnight with the family notary and two locked document cases.
However, the recording stopped before they emerged.
Victoria claimed the cameras malfunctioned.
Emily opened another page from the scattered folder.
It showed that Charles had supposedly declared her mentally unstable and financially irresponsible.
The evaluation came from Dr. Samuel Price, a psychiatrist Emily had never met.
Then a notification appeared on Daniel’s phone.

He carried an emergency guardianship order authorizing Victoria to place Emily in a private psychiatric residence that very night.
