Chapter 3 - The Doctor Who Sold Sanity

Dr. Price entered the foyer as though Emily’s freedom had already been decided.

He said Charles had worried about his daughter’s “resentment toward wealth” and feared she might damage the Hartwell legacy.

Emily stared at him.

“You have never examined me.”

Price adjusted his glasses.

“I reviewed family testimony. Sometimes instability is obvious long before a patient accepts it.”

Victoria smiled.

“Poor girls spend their lives envying families like ours. Give them one mansion, and suddenly they think every room belongs to them.”

Emily stepped forward despite Daniel’s protective arm.

“You forged a dead man’s will, bought a doctor and tried to throw me down the stairs. Do not call my anger an illness because the truth finally frightens you.”

Daniel examined Price’s court filing.

The evaluation described an outburst Emily supposedly had that morning—two hours before she arrived at the mansion.

Someone had written the incident before it happened.

Price attempted to leave.

Security blocked him.

He confessed Victoria paid his clinic five hundred thousand dollars through the Hartwell Family Foundation, but claimed the forged medical report had been ordered by someone above her.

Victoria screamed that he was lying.

Price opened his briefcase and produced Charles’s original treatment records.

They showed Charles had not died from the heart condition listed on his death certificate.

His blood contained a medication prescribed only to Victoria.

Then Price whispered, “She did not kill him to inherit the estate.”

“She killed him because he was about to reveal who Emily’s mother really was.”
