Chapter 7 - The Man Who Sent Her Away
Daniel admitted that twenty-eight years earlier, he had been a junior attorney working under Charles’s father.
He delivered the threat forcing Anna into witness protection: disappear publicly, surrender contact with Emily and the family would allow the federal case to continue without attacking her daughter.
Daniel was twenty-one, ambitious and terrified of losing his career.
He obeyed.
Emily slapped the letter against his chest.
“You watched me mourn a living mother. Every birthday, every funeral, every lie—and you stood beside my father pretending silence was loyalty.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I was not protecting you. I was protecting the future I wanted.”
Victoria laughed.
“Finally, the noble rescuer admits he is just another employee who sold his conscience for access.”
Daniel looked at her.
“The difference is that I am done asking power to forgive me.”
He publicly surrendered his law license and agreed to testify against the Hartwell family without immunity.
His confession unlocked sealed files proving Victoria had continued intercepting Anna’s letters after Charles tried to reunite mother and daughter.
Charles planned to expose everything by changing his will.
That was why Victoria forged the documents and drugged him.
Federal agents moved to arrest her.
Victoria suddenly shouted that Charles was still alive.
She claimed his funeral had been staged to protect the family stock price after the medication left him incapacitated.
