Chapter 4 - The Crash That Built Their Empire
Grace had been told her parents died when their vehicle lost control during a winter storm outside Evanston.
The police report described dangerous road conditions and excessive speed.
Walter’s letter told a different story.
Grace’s father, Michael Hale, had discovered that Richard Mercer was secretly borrowing against trust property and using charitable housing funds to support private investments.
Michael planned to confront the board the following morning.
He never arrived.
A witness saw Richard’s black sedan following the Hale vehicle minutes before the crash.
That witness was a hotel valet named Samuel Ortiz.
Two days later, Samuel was arrested for stealing jewelry from a Mercer guest and deported before he could testify.
Daniel dismissed the allegation as an attack on his dead father.
Walter corrected him.
Richard Mercer was still alive, living quietly at a private estate in Wisconsin after announcing his retirement for health reasons.
Grace realized Daniel had lied about that too.
He had told her Richard died three years earlier and used the supposed funeral as a reason to postpone their wedding.
Ms. Reed explained that Richard’s death certificate had been issued by the same private medical network that declared Walter dead.
The Mercer family had not merely stolen a trust.
They had created an administrative system capable of erasing inconvenient people.
Poor witnesses were arrested.
Elderly owners were declared incompetent.
Domestic employees were accused of theft.
Anyone without money for immediate legal representation disappeared beneath official documents carrying respectable signatures.
Daniel accused Ms. Reed of constructing a conspiracy from unrelated tragedies.
She reminded him that her own mother had cleaned offices for Mercer Holdings until she was fired after finding Walter’s name on hidden payment records.
Naomi became an estate attorney because she spent her childhood watching rich men describe retaliation as standard procedure.
Daniel looked from the attorney to Walter and realized both had spent years preparing for this moment.
He attempted to call his driver, but the black town car belonged to the Hale Trust, not Mercer Holdings.
Ms. Reed informed him that Walter’s reappearance automatically suspended Daniel’s authority over trust assets until a court reviewed the original declaration of death.
Daniel’s company credit cards, private aircraft and executive accounts were already frozen.
For the first time, he stood on a public sidewalk without financial control.
Then Grace’s phone rang.
Richard Mercer’s voice came through the speaker.

To prove it, he sent a live video showing Grace’s childhood nanny tied to a chair inside the abandoned Hale family mansion.
