Chapter 6 - The Boy They Protected
Daniel was nineteen when Grace’s parents died.
He admitted riding in Richard’s sedan that evening but insisted he remembered little because he had been drinking after a college party.
Richard told him they were following the Hales to discuss an urgent family matter.
According to Daniel, Michael’s car suddenly swerved and crashed without contact.
Samuel’s testimony contradicted him.
Richard’s sedan had struck the Hale vehicle twice.
Daniel begged his father to stop after the first collision.
After the crash, Richard ordered him to remain in the car while he removed a document case from Michael’s vehicle.
Daniel had remained silent for twenty years.
He told Grace he was frightened, dependent on his father and convinced the accident had already killed her parents.
Grace asked whether fear had also forced him to hide Walter’s letters, control her charity and humiliate the elderly man on the sidewalk.
Daniel could not answer.
He had once been a frightened teenager, but he had become an adult who benefited from the same crime.
The distinction mattered.
Privilege often began as protection and matured into participation.
Police rescued Margaret and Samuel from the mansion without injury, but Richard escaped through a service tunnel.
Inside the nursery, investigators found forged theft confessions signed by dozens of former employees.
Margaret’s file included a settlement offering her fifty thousand dollars to accept responsibility for jewelry Richard had planted in her room.
She refused.
Richard threatened to report her undocumented sister to immigration authorities and used Grace’s safety as leverage.
Margaret disappeared to protect both women.
Grace apologized for believing the accusation as a child.
Margaret told her the child was not responsible.
The adults who taught her whom to trust were.
Walter regained temporary control of the Hale Trust and immediately suspended every Mercer executive.
He announced that displaced tenants and former employees would receive representation before any family member received another dollar.
Daniel accused Walter of acting from revenge.
Walter replied that accountability always felt like revenge to people accustomed to immunity.
Then investigators opened Michael Hale’s document case.
It contained proof that Richard was not the sole architect of the trust theft.
Michael had been sending confidential reports to Grace’s mother, Elizabeth.
Her signature appeared on several transfers.
