Chapter 5 - The Nanny They Called a Thief
Margaret Lewis had cared for Grace from infancy until the year Walter disappeared.
Grace remembered waking one morning and being told Margaret had stolen her mother’s jewelry.
Daniel’s family said the nanny fled before police could arrest her.
The live video showed Margaret alive, older and frightened but conscious, seated inside a dusty room Grace recognized as her childhood nursery.
Richard Mercer stood behind the camera.
He demanded that Grace reject Walter publicly, return the Hale Trust to Mercer control and dismiss Naomi Reed as her attorney.
Otherwise, Margaret would be blamed for Walter’s disappearance and turned over to police under an active warrant.
Grace asked why an innocent woman would fear the police.
Walter answered before Richard could.
Because the warrant had been waiting for seventeen years.
The Mercers understood that law enforcement did not need to be openly corrupt when paperwork had already defined the victim as guilty.
Margaret was a Black domestic worker with no family wealth, while Richard was a celebrated attorney and civic donor.
His accusation would enter the courthouse wearing a tailored suit.
Her truth would arrive in handcuffs.
Daniel urged Grace to cooperate, claiming Margaret would receive fair treatment if she surrendered.
Grace looked at him with disgust.
He had spent years praising her foundation’s racial-justice grants while privately trusting the same system only when it protected his family.
Ms. Reed traced the video through a property database.
The Hale mansion had been transferred to a Mercer shell company after Walter’s legal death.
Grace asked Daniel whether he knew Margaret was there.
He swore he did not.
Then Walter noticed Daniel’s gold watch.
It had belonged to Michael Hale and disappeared after the crash.
Daniel claimed Richard gave it to him as a graduation gift.
Walter opened the watch’s hidden engraving.
Inside were Michael’s initials and the coordinates of a private trust archive beneath the mansion.
Richard had unknowingly handed Daniel the key to the records he spent decades hiding.
Chicago police prepared to enter the property.
Before they arrived, Richard sent one final image.
