Chapter 7 - The Mother She Could Not Defend
Grace spent her life believing her mother had been gentle, principled and uninterested in family wealth.
The documents showed Elizabeth approving loans that removed millions from the Hale Trust.
One transfer financed the first Mercer luxury development.
Another paid legal fees for the petition declaring Walter incompetent.
Daniel used the records immediately.
He claimed Grace’s parents were equal partners with Richard and that Walter had rewritten history to preserve his heroic image.
Walter admitted Elizabeth signed the documents.
He also explained why.
Richard had threatened to expose that Michael was not Grace’s biological father.
Elizabeth feared a public custody fight would allow Richard to take control of the child through a distant family connection.
She signed temporary transfers believing the money would be returned once Grace was safe.
When she discovered the loans were permanent, she joined Michael in preparing evidence against Richard.
Grace felt anger toward everyone.
Her mother had allowed fear of scandal to place other families at risk.
Walter had protected Grace from the truth for decades.
Daniel had used the secret to control her without explaining it.
Every wealthy adult claimed deception had been necessary for her protection, while lower-income tenants, employees and witnesses paid the actual price.
Ms. Reed located Grace’s original birth certificate inside the archive.
The father’s name had been sealed by a Cook County judge.
A second document identified Walter as the emergency guardian if Elizabeth died.
That meant Walter had known Grace’s biological father.
He refused to reveal the name until Grace asked him directly.
Walter said her father was not a wealthy donor, attorney or company heir.
He was Anthony Brooks, a union organizer who worked at the Hale factory.
Elizabeth loved him, but Walter’s father threatened to disinherit her and destroy Anthony’s career if they remained together.
Anthony disappeared shortly before Grace’s birth.
Grace understood that her identity had been shaped by the same class prejudice she claimed to fight through philanthropy.
Her mother chose a socially acceptable marriage.
Her biological father was erased.
Then Margaret recognized Anthony’s photograph.
She said he had not abandoned Elizabeth.
Richard Mercer had paid police officers to arrest him during a labor protest.
Anthony Brooks had died in prison under another name.
Ms. Reed examined the record and went silent.
Anthony had not died.
