Chapter 8 - The Father She Passed Every Morning
Anthony Brooks had sat outside Grace’s foundation headquarters for nearly six months.
Grace had passed him repeatedly on her way to meetings about homelessness, sometimes offering cash through an assistant but never stopping to ask his name.
The realization humiliated her more deeply than Daniel’s betrayal.
She had become skilled at helping social categories while overlooking the people directly before her.
Anthony avoided approaching because Richard’s agents threatened to revoke Walter’s legal claim and expose Grace’s birth history in the press.
He remained near the foundation to watch his daughter from a distance.
Walter had found him only weeks earlier.
They were gathering evidence when Richard’s men took Anthony from a shelter.
Daniel called the situation tragic but insisted Grace should consider how a public paternity scandal might affect the foundation.
Grace finally understood that reputation was still the only language he spoke.
Her father had been imprisoned under false charges, stripped of employment and left homeless.
Daniel worried about donor confidence.
Ms. Reed traced Anthony’s shelter identification card to a private security office owned by Mercer Holdings.
Richard broadcast a message offering a trade.
Walter had to sign a permanent transfer surrendering the Hale Trust.
In return, Anthony would be released at a downtown police station.
Walter agreed immediately.
Grace objected because the trust funded thousands of scholarships and housing programs.
Walter said no institution, however valuable, justified sacrificing another poor man so wealthy people could preserve control.
Daniel volunteered to carry the transfer documents to Richard.
Grace did not trust him, but Walter said Daniel needed one final opportunity to choose something other than inheritance.
At the meeting site beneath an elevated train line, Daniel handed Richard the documents.
Richard released Anthony from a black SUV.
Then he ordered Daniel to enter the vehicle with him.
Daniel refused.
Richard laughed and revealed that the transfer was unnecessary.
Mercer attorneys had already obtained a court order declaring Walter mentally incompetent based on his years of homelessness.
The judge approved it without meeting him.
Police vehicles surrounded the street.
An officer approached Walter and said he was being taken for psychiatric evaluation.
Richard smiled from the SUV.
