Chapter 14 - The Daughter Richard Was Never Told ExistedRichard stared at his mother.

“No.”

Vivian said nothing.

“Anna and I had three daughters.”

The older woman's expression broke.

“No.”

Emily stood between them and the staircase.

The triplets were watching from above.

She immediately looked up.

“Girls, back to your room.”

Regina shook her head.

“No.”

Emily almost smiled despite everything.

Of course not.

They were tired of adults having secret conversations about their lives.

Still, this truth belonged first to Richard.

Emily looked at him.

“Take them upstairs.”

He hesitated.

Then nodded.

For once, he did not argue.

When he returned, Vivian was sitting beside the unopened envelope.

Richard remained standing.

“Who is Rose?”

Vivian looked older.

“Anna was nineteen.”

Richard's face changed.

“Before we met.”

“Yes.”

“She had a child?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Boston.”

“With who?”

Vivian shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“That's not good enough.”

“No.”

“Did the baby die?”

Vivian closed her eyes.

“That was what Anna was told.”

Silence.

Emily felt cold.

“What do you mean, what she was told?”

Vivian looked at her.

“The baby was born early.”

“Very small.”

“Anna's mother was dead.”

“Her father was terrified of scandal.”

Richard stared.

“What happened?”

Vivian's voice became quieter.

“The family arranged the hospital.”

Emily already knew she would hate the next sentence.

“They told Anna the baby did not survive.”

Richard stopped breathing.

“And?”

Vivian looked toward the envelope.

“The trust records suggest she did.”

Silence.

Richard stumbled backward.

“You knew?”

“Not then.”

“When?”

“Years later.”

“How many?”

Vivian hesitated.

Emily closed her eyes.

Always the pause.

Always the number wealthy families feared saying aloud.

Richard's voice sharpened.

“How many years?”

“Ten.”

His face collapsed.

“You knew for ten years that my wife might have a living daughter.”

“Yes.”

“Did Anna know?”

“No.”

“Did you tell her?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Vivian began crying.

“To protect her.”

Emily laughed.

Not loudly.

Just once.

Vivian looked at her.

Emily's face hardened.

“No.”

The older woman stopped.

“You don't get to use that word again.”

Silence.

Richard stared at his mother.

“Why didn't you tell Anna?”

Vivian finally gave the real answer.

“Because the fourth beneficiary complicated the trust.”

There it was.

Money.

Not love.

Not grief.

Ownership.

Emily looked at the cream envelope.

Anna had unknowingly created a trust for four daughters?

Vivian explained.

Anna's father had privately told her before his death that the first child might have survived.

Anna refused to accept it without proof.

So when creating the daughters' trust, she included a conditional fourth share.

Twenty-one million dollars.

Held separately.

Waiting.

If Rose lived, she received it.

If not, it returned equally to the triplets.

Richard looked sick.

“And Jonathan knew.”

Vivian nodded.

“Of course he knew.”

“Victoria?”

“No.”

Emily looked at the envelope.

“Then who sent this?”

No one knew.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A young woman.

Dark hair.

Gray eyes.

Standing outside a modest apartment building.

On the back:

ROSE ANNA BENNETT — AGE 25.

Richard's hands shook.

Emily looked closer.

The woman looked like Anna.

Not vaguely.

Not enough for coincidence.

She had Anna's eyes.

Anna's mouth.

The same slight tilt of the head.

Richard whispered:

“She is alive.”

Vivian said nothing.

Emily turned the photograph over again.

Another line was written beneath the first.

She has spent her entire life believing her mother abandoned her.

Richard closed his eyes.

The injustice of it filled the room.

One rich family told Anna her baby died.

Somewhere else, one child grew up believing Anna simply walked away.

Two women grieving each other.

Both alive.

Money and reputation standing between them.

Then Richard noticed one final item in the envelope.

A copy of a trust access request.

Submitted two days earlier.

Someone had tried to withdraw Rose's twenty-one million dollars.

The requested recipient was:

Hale Family Residential Services.

Everyone looked at Vivian.

And this time, even she looked terrified.

Because she had not submitted it.
