Chapter 28 - Sarah's Final Statement Named the Person Who Changed Anna's MedicationThe document arrived electronically.

No one moved.
Emily stared at the file.
FINAL STATEMENT OF SARAH PARKER.
Her mother's name.
Real.
Signed.
Dated three days before her supposed death.
Rose stood beside her.
Richard several feet away.
Vivian sat silently.
The triplets were upstairs with Catherine now, safe and guarded.
Jonathan and Victoria remained outside the gates.
Still watching.
Emily opened the statement.
The first line read:
If this is being opened, then someone finally touched the Hale Residential accounts.
Emily almost smiled through tears.
Sarah had known.
Of course she had.
The statement continued.
Emily, I am sorry you had to learn any of this through documents. You deserved a mother who told you more. I was afraid more often than I was brave.
Emily began crying.
No one told her to stop.
Good.
Sarah continued.
But there is one truth I refused to take to my grave. Anna's medication was changed deliberately.
Richard closed his eyes.
Rose gripped Emily's hand.
I found the original prescription. I found the replacement order. I found the access record.
Emily's heart pounded.
Then:
Richard did not sign it.
He exhaled shakily.
But the next line followed.
His credentials were used by someone who had access to both the Hale family office and Anna's medical file.
Emily looked at Vivian.
The older woman went pale.
Sarah's statement continued:
Jonathan Crane did not make the change.
Outside the gates, Jonathan smiled.
Of course he did.
But Sarah continued:
He helped hide it.
His smile vanished.
Satisfaction.
Quiet.
Precise.
Emily kept reading.
Daniel Crane approved the legal concealment.
Rose's face hardened.
But the person who requested the medication change was family.
Silence.
Richard stared.
Vivian closed her eyes.
Emily reached the next line.
Stopped.
No.
Rose looked at her.
“What?”
Emily could not speak.
Richard stepped closer.
“Who?”
Emily looked at Vivian.
The old woman's face collapsed.
She knew.
Emily read aloud:
Vivian Hale requested the medication change.
Silence.
Richard stopped breathing.
“Mother?”
Vivian began crying.
“No.”
Emily looked at her.
“You did.”
“No.”
“Sarah named you.”
“I did not know it would kill her.”
The room froze.
Not denial.
Explanation.
Richard stepped backward.
The woman who had controlled his daughters' accounts.
Planned separate schools.
Worked with Jonathan.
Used nine million dollars from their trust.
Had also requested Anna's medication change.
Emily's voice became cold.
“Why?”
Vivian covered her face.
Richard shouted:
“Why?”
The answer came broken.
“Because Anna was going to expose everything.”
Silence.
“What everything?” Emily asked.
“The first child.”
“Rose.”
“The falsified hospital records.”
“The trust manipulations.”
“Sarah.”
“Emily.”
“The residential company.”
“All of it.”
Richard looked sick.
“So you changed her medication.”
Vivian shook her head desperately.
“I asked the doctor to reduce one prescription.”
“Why?”
“To delay her.”
Emily stared.
The same language.
Delay.
Not harm.
Not kill.
Delay.
Powerful people always had softer verbs.
Vivian continued.
“I thought she'd become too weak to attend the board meeting.”
Rose looked disgusted.
“You wanted her too sick to speak.”
Vivian cried.
“Yes.”
Silence.
Richard turned away.
Broken.
Emily looked at Sarah's statement again.
There was more.
Vivian made the request. But she did not choose the dosage.
Everyone froze.
Emily continued.
Someone else altered it further.
Vivian looked up.
“What?”
Richard stared.
Emily's heart pounded.
The person who requested the original reduction was not necessarily the person who made the lethal change.
Sarah continued:
Vivian wanted delay. The second person wanted silence.
Jonathan's face outside the gate changed.
Victoria stepped away from him.
Emily noticed.
She read further.
The second access came from Daniel Crane's account.
Richard said:
“Then Daniel killed Anna.”
Emily shook her head.
“Wait.”
The final lines appeared.
Daniel Crane's account was accessed from inside the Hale mansion.
Silence.
At 11:42 p.m.
Vivian looked terrified.
Richard stared.
Emily continued:
Only one person in the house knew Daniel's private authorization code.
Rose whispered:
“Who?”
Emily read the name.
Then stopped breathing.
Anna.
Silence.
Richard stared.
“No.”
Vivian covered her mouth.
Emily looked again.
The second medication change had been made using Daniel's credentials.
From inside the Hale mansion.
With a code only Anna supposedly knew.
That meant either Anna had altered her own medication.
Or someone had learned the code from her.
Then Rose looked toward the security monitor.
Jonathan was no longer smiling.
Victoria was backing away from him.
And suddenly the mansion gates began opening.
No one had authorized it.
Emily stared.
Jonathan looked surprised too.
The gates moved wider.
A third car approached from the darkness.
Old.
Plain.
Nothing like the vehicles belonging to the Hale family.
It stopped beside Jonathan and Victoria.
The driver's door opened.
An older woman stepped out.
Thin.
Gray hair.
Simple coat.
Emily stopped breathing.
Rose covered her mouth.
Richard stared.
The woman looked directly toward the mansion camera.
Then raised one hand.
Emily whispered:
“Mom?”
Sarah Parker was alive.
Jonathan stepped backward.
Vivian stood.
Rose began crying.
And Sarah spoke through the gate intercom:
“Emily, do not let Jonathan inside.”
A pause.
“Anna changed her own medication on purpose.”
Everyone froze.
Then Sarah looked toward Richard.
“But she did it because someone convinced her it was the only way to keep her four daughters alive.”
Emily's blood ran cold.
“Who?”
Sarah looked at Jonathan.
Then at Victoria.
Finally toward the mansion.
And answered:
“The person is already inside the house.”
Upstairs, one of the triplets screamed.
Emily turned.
Catherine was supposed to be with them.
The hallway camera came on.
Catherine stood outside Valerie's bedroom.
Holding Anna's medical file.
Smiling.
And beside her was a man no one had seen enter.
Old.
Silver-haired.
Wearing a black suit.
Jonathan Crane looked at the screen.
His face collapsed.
He whispered:
“Father?”
Daniel Crane—the supposedly dead lawyer who had built the entire system—stood inside the mansion with the four girls above him.
And he looked directly into the camera.
Then said:
May you like
“It's time the children learn why Anna chose which one of them was worth saving first.”
